The Presidents Cup has become one of the more popular team events in golf
ever since it was first established in 1994. It pits a team representing the United States
against a team of international stars minus Europeans. The 2019 version the 13th in the event's history
was hosted by the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The United States team
was made up of the top eight players who earned the most FedExCup points over a two-year period as well as four
captain's picks. Tiger Woods had already been named captain when an interesting situationarose for his captain's picks. Coming off his record-tying 82nd PGA Tour win at the ZOZO Championship, Woods was arguably the hottest
golfer in the world. It was an easy decision and one that elicited questionsfrom nobody
when Woods picked himself as the final team member.
With the announcement, he became the second-ever playing captain
in Presidents Cup history. Hale Irwin was the first and only in 1994.
