In the early 1990s, the Philadelphia Flyers went through a rebuild, focusing their plans around the 1991 first overall pick, Eric Lindros. After some team improvement in the first two stellar years of his career, the team found the right personnel to make everything click and they reached new heights in the 1994-95 season, winning the Atlantic Division to claim a playoff berth. After being named the MVP of that year, Lindros had another strong campaign with 115 points the next season. The Flyers’ efforts paid off the most in 1996-1997. Lindros led the league with 26 playoff points (12 goals and 14 assists) as Philadelphia flew through the Eastern Conference playoffs. The Flyers captain helped lead the team to 4-1 series wins in each of the first three series to earn them a spot on the sport’s highest stage: the Stanley Cup Finals. The franchise had a complete turnaround in the 1990s and Lindros can take credit for helping lead the way. This run was a defining moment in the center’s career, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016 as a result. The best stretch of Eric Lindros’ career was spent as part of a tandem called the Legion of Doom. After a slow start to the 1994-95 season, the Philadelphia Flyers needed change, so they formed this new line featuring Lindros, John LeClair, and Mikael Renberg. The Legion of Doom proved to be an instant success with their offensive prowess and physicality, as the Flyers went 25-9-3 for the rest of the season while outscoring opponents 128-98. Philadelphia would make the playoffs for the first time in six seasons and Lindros’ success was rewarded with the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL MVP. The success kept rolling as Lindros scored 115 points the next season to go along with 51 goals from LeClair. 1996-97 turned out to be the last season of the Legion of Doom, but it was also the best as the Flyers reached the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in a decade. The three years of the Legion of Doom helped set the tone for years of winning for the Flyers and set the tone for Lindros’ Hall of Fame career. Captaincy has been long regarded as one of the highest honors for hockey players. Team captains have a lot of responsibilities on and off the ice, as they are seen as the team leader and usually one of the team’s top players. After two great seasons to start his career, in 1994 Eric Lindros was named the tenth captain in Philadelphia Flyers history at just 21 years old. The decision instantly proved to be correct, as the new captain won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the 1994-95 season MVP and led the Flyers to their first playoff appearance in six seasons. Lindros continued his dominance and high scoring to help take Philadelphia to the playoffs in the next five years to finish his tenure with the team, including a Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 1997. The hall-of-famer’s leadership and strong play help lead the Flyers back to relevance and cemented him as a Flyers legend. This image is autographed by Eric Lindros with a silver paint pen. After being named the youngest Flyers’ captain ever at the age of 21, skating in six NHL All-Star games, and bringing home the 1995 Hart Memorial Trophy, Eric Lindros achieved the greatest accomplishment of them all once inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016. Whether he was skating on the legendary Legion of Doom line with John LeClair and Mikael Renberg or consistently striking fear into the hearts of defenders with his efficient scoring (18th all-time @ 1.14 PPG), Lindros’ mark on the game stretches across his entire hockey career and will forever be immortalized at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Having experimented with the idea of an outdoor ice hockey game since the early 2000’s, the NHL officially inaugurated the NHL Winter Classic in 2008, looking to have an outdoor, regular season game played around New Year’s Day on the chosen city’s respective football or baseball field. To add to the excitement of the event, the NHL also opted for there to be an alumni game played amongst former players of the chosen teams if able and willing to play. To kick start 2012, the decision was made to celebrate two historic franchises and rivals by having the Philadelphia Flyers host the New York Rangers at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Despite having retired just a few years earlier in 2007, Eric Lindros was thrilled to participate in this leisurely challenge alongside some of his former teammates and other all-time greats such as Bernie Parent, Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber, Mark Howe, John LeClair, and Mark Messier. While this game was played in a light-hearted spirit, Lindros still received a tremendous ovation from the Philly faithful upon his introduction and was able to record an assist and a penalty to help lead the Flyers alumni to a 3-1 victory over their New York counterparts. Known for his star role on the legendary Legion of Boom line that helped revitalize the Philadelphia Flyers organization in the 90’s, it was of no surprise for the Philly faithful to see #88’s jersey hung up in the rafters at Wells Fargo Center in an official jersey retirement ceremony celebrating his key accomplishments, accolades, and moments as a Flyer on January 18, 2018. While falling just short of bringing home a Stanley Cup championship during his run in Philadelphia, Lindros’ career as a Flyer was nothing but spectacular as he averaged 1.35 PPG, earned four Bobby Clarke (Team MVP) Trophies, and led the Flyers to the playoffs in each of his years as team captain, including a 26 point playoff run in which he was the catalyst to a Stanley Cup Finals appearance against the Detroit Red Wings in 1997. As the youngest captain in Philadelphia Flyers’ history, the former #1 overall pick had lofty expectations bestowed upon him in looking to reignite the excitement and flame within his organization. Wasting little time, Lindros led the Flyers to the playoffs in each of his 6 seasons as captain and even won the Hart Memorial Trophy with 1.52 PPG during the 1994-1995 season. During this season, Lindros became the first Flyer to record a hat trick in back-to-back games when he did it against the Florida Panthers and the Montreal Canadiens in the March of ’95. Eric Lindros played for a total of four teams throughout his Hall of Fame NHL career, but his longest and most successful tenure was his time with the Philadelphia Flyers. Eric Lindros spent his first eight seasons in the NHL with the Flyers, and it didn’t take long for him to make himself known. In September 1994, after only two seasons in the NHL, Eric Lindros was named captain of the Flyers. Lindros did not disappoint that season scoring 29 goals and 70 points in the strike shortened season en route to winning the Hart Memorial Trophy and leading the Flyers to their first playoff appearance in six years. Two years later in 1997 Lindros would help the Flyers reach their first Stanley Cup Finals in ten years. ERIC LINDROS Signed by Eric Lindros Signed in Silver Ink When the Philadelphia Flyers were founded in 1967, it was immediately established that they would have an orange and black color scheme in honor of the Philadelphia Quakers, the former NHL team in the city. Ever since, the Flyers have kept this unique look with variations of orange and black. For the first time in the 1997-98 season, the team introduced alternate jerseys with black as the main color. The captain on that team was Eric Lindros, now considered one of the greatest Flyers of all time. In his eight seasons in Philadelphia, the future hall-of-famer was a six-time All-Star and won one Hart Memorial Trophy (MVP), while also taking the team to a Stanley Cup Finals. Lindros remains forever associated with the Flyers, as now are the black jerseys, which has seen time as primary jerseys and whose variation still remains in the rotation today. ERIC LINDROS Signed by Eric Lindros Signed in Silver Ink Despite hockey players being most recognized for their accomplishments on their respective NHL teams, the impact that these skaters have while representing their home countries tends to generate more pride as many of them have grown up watching their all-time favorite players in the Olympics, IIHF World Championships, and a number of other international events. For Eric Lindros, this notion of performing at your best while skating for Team Canada remained the same as he registered 17 points in just 20 total Olympic games for Team Canada spanning across three different Olympic games, including the 1998 Nagano Olympics in which he was named Captain of Team Canada and the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics where he helped Team Canada defeat the U.S. to win gold. ERIC LINDROS Signed by Eric Lindros Signed in Black Ink Eric Lindros was born to play hockey and from an early age it was known he would be the next great thing. The London, Ontario natice became a coveted player while playing minor hockey and pee-wee tournaments, nicknamed by many “The Next One” due to his ability to score and play physical against anyone. In the 1989 OHL Draft, Lindros was selected first overall, and he did not disappoint. The center led the Oshawa Generals to win both the OHL and CHL championships in his first season, and then followed that campaign up with an MVP award while leading the OHL in scoring the next year. In 1991 Lindros once again became the number one overall pick in a draft, this time in the NHL. He was a star right from the beginning for the Philadelphia Flyers, with whom he became captain in just his third season while on the way to winning the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league’s MVP. Lindros put together a great career that led him to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016 and he had his number 88 retired by the Flyers.
