To prepare for action against a hostile tribe, a Crow war chief invokes the power of the Seven Stars (the Big Dipper), Old Women’s Grandchild (a mythic warrior) and all the other heavenly, supernatural ones from Crow legend. He is seeking their help and favor through the venerative smoke of his war pipe. The scared smoke will carry his prayers heavenward.
