Max Jacquiard - Low Level Bridge , Edmonton

Completed in 1900, this was Edmonton's first bridge across the North
Saskatchewan River. After the construction of the High Level Bridge in 1913,
it became known as the Low Level Bridge. The rail line, which was removed
in the 1950s, wound upgrade to the left to join Canadian National Railway's
City yard, passing underneath the north end of Canadian Pacific's High
Level Bridge a mile or so upstream.

Streetcars and other vehicles also used the bridge. A second span was
was added in 1949 to ease congestion, but rail traffic ceased in the early 1950s.

In this pre-1949 scene, the Hotel MacDonald, built by the Grand Trunk
Pacific in 1915, dominates the skyline.

Max Jacquiard has a sizeable research library of printed materials, photos and
slides of steam trains and the places they would have operated. It is that attention
to precise and accurate details that can be seen in his paintings. The sensitivity
to his subject and quiet passion that is infused into each work seem to allow
Max Jaquiard to breath life into the canvases. The images he creates have
captured the imaginations of steam buffs across Canada and the United
States. His paintings grace the walls in homes across North America.
