Max Jacquiard - Double Header on Field Hill

This double headed train is crossing the Kicking Horse river late in the afternoon, heading east towards Lake Louise, Banff and Calgary. In the background, across the valley, are Mts. Cathedral and Stephen.
As originally built, the CPR line out of the Kicking Horse river valley was impossibly steep. It wasn't until 1909 that the problem was resolved with the completion of two spiral shaped tunnels, each almost a thousand metres long, dug into the mountains on either side of the valley. This reduced the grade to 2.2% from 4.5% by doubling the distance travelled between Field and the summit. This was a formidable challenge and is considered one of the greatest engineering feats in railroad history. After crossing the Kicking Horse river, this train will enter the lower spiral tunnel in the side of Mt. Ogden, then it will cross the river again in the opposite direction to reach the upper spiral and upon exiting that second spiral it will continue its way eastward through Yoho National Park and into Alberta.
