In a move that still shocks hockey fans to the core to this day, the Edmonton Oilers
traded their transcendent talent and leader of their team, Wayne Gretzky, to the Los Angeles Kings
just months removed from winning the 1988 Stanley Cup championship. Even though the asking
price for Gretzky was through the roof, “The Great One” took it personally that the team who he’d led
to four Stanley Cup championships and won nine MVPs for would ship him off for young players and cash.
Not a stranger to being doubted, Gretzky made it his mission to prove to the world that he was still
within his prime and just as elite as ever. During his eight seasons spent with the Kings,
Gretzky received the same beloved treatment from fans and teammates as he led the league
in scoring and was awarded the Art Ross trophy four times, tallying 41 goals and 163 points
during his highest scoring season as a King.
