WAYNE GRETZKY

After being traded from the Oilers to the Kings in the summer of 1988 Wayne Gretzky would make an immediate impact with his new team. Gretzky was named alternate captain upon arriving to the Kings and would score on his very first shot on goal. Gretzky would win the Hart Trophy for MVP in his first season with the Kings and lead them to a playoff upset of his former team the Edmonton Oilers. While Gretzky’s time with the Kings included numerous personal accomplishments he also helped to inspire fan interest in hockey in Southern California as the Kings immediately saw an increase in attendance and enjoyed sellouts regularly during Gretzky’s tenure with the Kings. To commemorate his time in LA, the Kings unveiled a statue of Gretzky waving to the fans outside of Crypto.com Arena.
