Called The Old Stump, Lake Superior, the 1926 sketch was an early study for one of Harris's most famous canvases, North Shore, Lake Superior, a cornerstone of the National Gallery Collection. The sketch's $3.5 million total pricetag (when factoring in a 17 per cent buyer's premium) is the second-highest amount ever paid for a painting in Canada. ( 2009 Heffels Auction ).

Lawrens art work has high contrast because he uses the whole gray scale. The light values in this painting is found up in the sky while the dark values are found below where the water and land is.The artist used a sense of depth because you can see that the landscape disappears in the distance slowly making the painting look more realistic.The foreground is the dead tree, the middle ground i the mountains/ land and in the background there is the water. The positive space in this painting is the mountains, rocks and the tree. the negative space is the water all around the objects.
The mood of this painting is peaceful because he chose warm colours so that the painting looks calm and quiet.
