"READY FOR FLIGHT - PEREGRINE FALCON"
bateman - ready for flight-peregrine falcon.jpg (41172 bytes)
950 s/n Paper
13 1/2 " x 25"
The most exciting raptor in the world is possibly the peregrine falcon.  It is one of the fastest creatures on the planet.  Its speed in a dive has been estimated at between 150 and 200 miles per hour.  The peregrine is built for the chase in an elongated teardrop shape - the ultimate in streamlining. - Robert Bateman

"RECLINING OCELOT"
reclining ocelot.JPG (22987 bytes)

950 s/n Paper
11 1/8" x 22 1/2"
$210

The ocelot is perhaps the most elegant of the small cats. The ocelot in this print is relaxed and watchful. The painting is in the soft mood of a shade, tropical siesta. - Robert Bateman

"RED FOX ON THE PROWL"
bateman - red fox on the prowl.jpg (46830 bytes)
950 s/n Paper
20 " x 31 3/4 "
$640
This fox is on the prowl.  He is about to check under the pine tree where the snow is thinner and where some of his prey might be finding shelter.  Just before he pushes through the tangle of twigs and grasses, he pauses for a moment and notices some rabbit tracks. - Robert Bateman

"RED SQUIRREL"

950 s/n Paper
11" x 17 3/4 "

Red squirrels, or their close cousins, are found all over the Northern Hemisphere, wherever there are coniferous trees.  They are very active, scampering, jumping and climbing throughout the day.  They seem to be either moving full tilt or in a “freeze alert” position.  This is the pose I have chosen for this painting. - Robert Bateman

Realistic painting is an attempt at illusion.  Depth, form, space and air must be portrayed on a two-dimensional surface.  The slightest change of angle creates a different apparent flat shape.  In my painting, I want to convey an understanding of all of the planes in depth by manipulating the shapes and their tones.  No picture such as a drawing or photograph is really adequate for reference.  Therefore, I often use these pictures to create three-dimensional reference or sculpture.  This not only gives me a better understanding but also allows me to see what happens in varying light conditions.  I have been doing these sculptures in clay or Plasticine for many years.  After I am finished using them for a given painting, the sculptures tend to be neglected and damaged or destroyed.  Many people have suggested that I put my sculptures in more permanent form such as bronze so that others could see and enjoy them.  The red-tailed hawk portrait shows the qualities of that particular species.  He is alert and handsome but with a certain mildness in his generally fierce bird of prey look.  The flat planes and concave and convex surfaces are exaggerated to help me express them more clearly in the painting. - Robert Bateman

"REEDS"
bateman - reeds.JPG (49564 bytes)
950 s/n Paper
15 1/4 " x 25 "
$795
I find that I am constantly surprised by what I see everyday.  The natural world is dynamic and almost never identical visually.  My surprises are usually modest and on a small and gentle scale.  One such small and surprising delight, this particular clump of reeds, was a glorious thing to me. - Robert Bateman

Most people can recall a place that is very special in their lives, a place that has many happy and meaningful memories that may date back to childhood.  For me, that place is what our family called Rocky Point. - Robert Bateman

bateman - ready for the hunt-snowy owl.jpg (37457 bytes)
950 s/n Paper
20" x 31 1/2"
$1195
The owl I have shown is perched on an old cedar post.  I enjoy the way the elements on the installations were placed by our forefathers.  On some long forgotten day, a farmer placed that post.  The reason is no longer evident, but for the owl it doesn’t matter.  The post is a perfect place from which to begin his hunt. - Robert Bateman

When I hear the chet-chet call of a flock of crossbills, I am carried back to the many happy times I have spent in the evergreen forests of the North. - Robert Bateman

"RED-TAILED HAWK BY THE CLIFF"
bateman - red-tailed hawk by the cliff.jpg (41264 bytes)
950 s/n Paper
20 " x 29 3/4 "
$965
I am honored to have a resident red-tail that has selected a big oak tree outside my studio window as his perch.  When someone comes out the door, he gives a single, shrill keeer-r-r and calmly takes wing, soaring down into the valley.  It never ceases to thrill me to look at a flying bird of prey. - Robert Bateman

"RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD AND RAIL FENCE"
bateman - red-winged blackbird and rail fence.jpg (50149 bytes)
950 s/n Paper
18 1/4" x25"
$1195
The bold, slashing strokes of the rail fence and its reflection attracted me because of the abstract form. It made me think of a Franz Kline painting or a piece of Japanese calligraphy.  The effect of the strokes suggested a Samurai conflict which seemed appropriate for these red-winged warriors. - Robert Bateman

"RED WOLF"
bateman - red wolf.JPG (71300 bytes)
950 s/n Paper

" x 16 "
$269
In this century, many species have become extinct.  One of the last major species to disappear in the wild in North America is the red wolf.  I have shown this one in the morning light, moving through the rank lowland grass and willow thicket.  This was its typical habitat when last seen in the wild. - Robert Bateman

"RESTING PLACE - CAPE BUFFALO"
bateman - resting place-cape buffalo a.jpg (52572 bytes)

950 s/n Paper Edition
19 1/2 " x 33 1/2 "
$285

The cape buffalo is a powerful and dangerous African mammal.  Often mistaken for the slovenly domestic water buffalo, the cape buffalo is more like a tough, Spanish fighting bull.  Here I have shown a mature bull in repose.  Something has startled him and his ever-present cattle egret companions - perhaps an approaching elephant or lion. - Robert Bateman

"RHINO AT NGORO, NGORO"
bateman - rhino at ngoro ngoro.JPG (41667 bytes)

Ngoro, Ngoro Crater is a microcosm of the great African plains.  Within a few square miles, you can see most of the wildlife that can be seen in all East Africa. - Robert Bateman

"RIVER OTTER"

I am fortunate enough to see otters like this proud fellow almost daily, scouting along the edge of the cliff at the water’s edge in front of our island home, pausing now and then to sniff the air with all the confidence of the lord of the estate. - Robert Bateman

"ROBINS AT THE NEST"

950 s/n Paper
11 1/4 " x  14"

The American robin is one of the most widespread birds in North America.  I have seen them in the South and at the arctic tree line, but most people think of them as “right around home” birds.  In fact, they have adapted so well to human settlement that they are probably more abundant around towns, villages and farms than they are in the wilderness. - Robert Bateman
