Robert Bateman Ready For Flight Peregrine Falcon

READY FOR FLIGHT PEREGRINE FALCON

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
13.5" x 25"
$845

The most exciting raptor in the world is possibly the peregrine falcon.  It is one of the fastest creatures on the planet.  Its speed in a dive has been estimated at between 150 and 200 miles per hour.  The peregrine is built for the chase in an elongated teardrop shape - the ultimate in streamlining. - Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Reclining Ocelot

" RECLINING OCELOT "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
11.125" x 22.5"
$175

The ocelot is perhaps the most elegant of the small cats. The ocelot in this print is relaxed and watchful. The painting is in the soft mood of a shade, tropical siesta. - Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Red Fox On The Prowl

" RED FOX ON THE PROWL "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
20" x 31.75"
$585

This fox is on the prowl. He is about to check under the pine tree where the snow is thinner and where some of his prey might be finding shelter. Just before he pushes through the tangle of twigs and grasses, he pauses for a moment and notices some rabbit tracks. - Robert Bateman

Robert bateman Red Squirrel

" RED SQUIRREL "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
11" x 17.75"
$685

Red squirrels, or their close cousins, are found all over the Northern Hemisphere, wherever there are coniferous trees.  They are very active, scampering, jumping and climbing throughout the day.  They seem to be either moving full tilt or in a “freeze alert” position.  This is the pose I have chosen for this painting. - Robert Bateman

Robert bateman Red-Tailed Hawk At The Cliff

" RED-TAILED HAWK BY THE CLIFF "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
20" x 29.75"
$965

I am honored to have a resident red-tail that has selected a big oak tree outside my studio window as his perch.  When someone comes out the door, he gives a single, shrill keeer-r-r and calmly takes wing, soaring down into the valley.  It never ceases to thrill me to look at a flying bird of prey. -

Realistic painting is an attempt at illusion.  Depth, form, space and air must be portrayed on a two-dimensional surface.  The slightest change of angle creates a different apparent flat shape.  In my painting, I want to convey an understanding of all of the planes in depth by manipulating the shapes and their tones.  No picture such as a drawing or photograph is really adequate for reference.  Therefore, I often use these pictures to create three-dimensional reference or sculpture.  This not only gives me a better understanding but also allows me to see what happens in varying light conditions.  I have been doing these sculptures in clay or Plasticine for many years.  After I am finished using them for a given painting, the sculptures tend to be neglected and damaged or destroyed.  Many people have suggested that I put my sculptures in more permanent form such as bronze so that others could see and enjoy them.  The red-tailed hawk portrait shows the qualities of that particular species.  He is alert and handsome but with a certain mildness in his generally fierce bird of prey look.  The flat planes and concave and convex surfaces are exaggerated to help me express them more clearly in the painting. - Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Resting Place Cape Buffalo

" RESTING PLACE - CAPE BUFFALO "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
19 1/2" x 33 1/2"
$215

The cape buffalo is a powerful and dangerous African mammal.  Often mistaken for the slovenly domestic water buffalo, the cape buffalo is more like a tough, Spanish fighting bull.  Here I have shown a mature bull in repose.  Something has startled him and his ever-present cattle egret companions - perhaps an approaching elephant or lion. - Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Rhino at Ngoro Ngoro

" RHINO AT NGORO, NGORO "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
20" x 32 "
$255

Ngoro, Ngoro Crater is a microcosm of the great African plains.  Within a few square miles, you can see most of the wildlife that can be seen in all East Africa. - Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman River Ford Tiger

" RIVER FORD - SIBERIAN TIGER "

Robert Bateman

195 s/n Giclee Canvas

$785

As he glides through the water, the tiger's reflected stripes seem to dissolve into an abstract pattern carried on the current. Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Riverbank Retreat Bobcat

" RIVERBANK RETREAT - BOBCAT "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper 12" x 18" $135
350 s/n Canvas 12" x 18" $305

It has been said that a tough man could " lick his weight in bobcats." That is one old saying that has not a particle of possibibility. Even one bobcat would be more than a handful. Weighing only 15-25 lbs. , a bobcat is a bundle of power and agility. However, like most domestic cats this wild animal spends much of it's time in almost complete relaxation. Bobcats have few favorite perches where they can rest, yet have a good view of possible prey or danger. Such is this perch on an embankment, partially shielded by palm fronds and grasses.

Robert bateman Roadside Tapestry

" ROADSIDE TAPESTRY "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
9.25" x 23.5"
$699

Periodically, I try to take myself by the collar and say "Bateman, wake up. Open your eyes. Hold on a second and look around." Nature has treasures to offer, if we will only pause for a moment, take a few deep breaths and smile. Some of the bounteous gifts come in late summer with the last flourish of flowers before fall. To call this roadside tapestry "weeds" is a travesty. The asters and goldenrod form a mural more lush and gorgeous than any Persian carpet. Robert Bateman

There is something about felines that hold a fascination for human beings. Perhaps it is their mystery and grace. Perhaps it is the fact that our primate ancestors greatly feared this quiet predator of the night. Many aspects of our forebears’ lives that made sense for millennia are still a part of our modern psyche. This painting grows out of those feelings. If you or I were close enough to see this leopard plunge down this cliff, it would be only seconds before the animal would be upon you. I wanted to instill a feeling of discomfort, partly by the unstable plunging action and partly by the proximity, made closer by cutting off the back part and forepaw of the leopard . . . almost as if he is inside your peripheral vision. The other aspect that excited me was the effort to portray the grace and power of the cat through the muscle, bone and sinew showing beneath the familiar glowing pelt. Robert Bateman

It was a feeling of power and dignity that I wanted to capture in this painting. The rhythmic flow of ancient rocks, with their intricate, weathered surfaces, the dark, mysterious forest and the confident, impressive animal all form a unity that sums up what is best in our natural world. " ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK IN ELM "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
18.25" x 25"
$435

This image is an important landmark in my work. It was started as an abstract - a bold, gesture painting which was strong and exciting. Three years after it was started, I finished the painting, after I had started to paint realistically again. I preferred the surface of the real world - elm bark - to the mere surface of the paint. Robert Bateman

In this picture, I wanted to give the feeling of richness, intimacy and elegance. I have lit the flowers from the back to give them a transparent glow, which echoes the jewel-like quality of the bird. Robert Bateman

These birds are among the world's greatest travelers. They breed in the high Arctic tundra and migrate as far south as the southern tip of South America. One can see them during migration in large, colorful flocks. Robert Bateman

" READY FOR THE HUNT - SNOWY OWL "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
20" x 31.5"
Email-price

The owl I have shown is perched on an old cedar post.  I enjoy the way the elements on the installations were placed by our forefathers.  On some long forgotten day, a farmer placed that post.  The reason is no longer evident, but for the owl it doesn’t matter.  The post is a perfect place from which to begin his hunt. - Robert Bateman

In Reclining Snow Leopard, I have shown this magnificent animal reclining on a rocky ledge - secure in his sense of kingdom and concealment. - Robert Bateman

" RED WOLF "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper

" x 16"
$299

In this century, many species have become extinct.  One of the last major species to disappear in the wild in North America is the red wolf.  I have shown this one in the morning light, moving through the rank lowland grass and willow thicket.  This was its typical habitat when last seen in the wild. - Robert Bateman

Robert bateman Red-Winged Blackbirds and Rail Fence

" RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD & RAIL FENCE

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
18.25" x 25"
$1125

The bold, slashing strokes of the rail fence and its reflection attracted me because of the abstract form. It made me think of a Franz Kline painting or a piece of Japanese calligraphy.  The effect of the strokes suggested a Samurai conflict which seemed appropriate for these red-winged warriors. -
Robert Bateman

Robert bateman Reeds

" REEDS "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
15.25" x 25"
$595

I find that I am constantly surprised by what I see everyday.  The natural world is dynamic and almost never identical visually.  My surprises are usually modest and on a small and gentle scale.  One such small and surprising delight, this particular clump of reeds, was a glorious thing to me. - Robert Bateman

Since DDT use in North America was banned in 1972, the bald eagle has become a hopeful symbol because the populations are springing back. For the time being, we are still thrilling to the sight of this magnificent bird, including at this nest in my own neighborhood. Robert Bateman

" RHODODENDRON STUDY "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper

My first view of rhododendrons in the wild was one of the most exhilarating moment of my life. The entier skyline was a blazing, snowy array of the Himalayas...a white wall featuring the famous sacred mountain, Kachanjunga. This spectacle was eclipsed by the great rhododendron trees - gnarled, ancient trunks and rhythmic branches all covered with what looked like thousands of bunches of red roses. Robert Bateman

The North American Wilderness Portfolio is a unique collaborative effort by six Mill Pond Press artist to portray the natural beauty of North America. The Portfolio was sparked by a mutual concern to preserve our pristine wilderness and its inhabitants. The idea behind the Portfolio is simple, and each piece has a common theme, yet each approach is a unique aritistic interpretation of the treasures of the North American wilderness. The artists who created the portfolio are Robert Bateman, Carl Brenders, Chris Calle, Paul Calle, Terry Isaac and John Seerey-Lester.

Robert Bateman Robins At The Nest

" ROBINS AT THE NEST "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
11.25" x 14"
$235

The American robin is one of the most widespread birds in North America.  I have seen them in the South and at the arctic tree line, but most people think of them as “right around home” birds.  In fact, they have adapted so well to human settlement that they are probably more abundant around towns, villages and farms than they are in the wilderness. - Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Rocky Point October

" ROCKY POINT - OCTOBER "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
11" x 17"
$535

Most people can recall a place that is very special in their lives, a place that has many happy and meaningful memories that may date back to childhood.  For me, that place is what our family called Rocky Point. - Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Rolling Waves Greater Scaup

" ROLLING WAVES - GREATER SCAUP "

1989 New York Duck Stamp Print
Robert Bateman

3330 s/n Paper
6.5" x9"
$181

Some of my earliest memories of bird watching, about which I became serious from the age of 12, were of winter hikes along Lake Ontario looking at rafts of winter ducks. These rafts would float in undulating patches, disappearing and reappearing as the movement of the water changed. It was many years before I saw the scaups in their breeding grounds in the far north and thought of them as individuals or pairs; I had always thought of them as flocks. Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Rose-Breasted Grosbeak

" ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK "

Robert Bateman

290 s/n Original Lithograph
10" x 8"
$345

One of the most welcome sounds of spring and summer is the cheerful warble of the rose-breasted grosbeak. When I lived in Ontario, I led naturalist hikes through the burgeoning life of a hardwood forest in May. The carpet of spring flowers on the forest floor would be fading, and the air would be filled with song. Migrating warblers, vireos and thrushes would be practicing their vocal territorial claims. Of all the songs, the rose-breasted grosbeak stood out with happy exuberance. In this original print, I have shown the male grosbeak later in the year, when the forest is dark and green. In spite of his spectacular plumage, he is seldom seen in the rich, leafy canopy. Robert Bateman

Robert bateman Royal Family Mute Swans

" ROYAL FAMILY - MUTE SWANS "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
20" x 32.75"
$635

Its two American cousins, the trumpeter and whistling swans, are of the wild, remote areas. The mute swan, on the other hand, is associated with soft landscapes of winding rivers and weeping willows or lush parks and grand estates. This is the elegant swan of poetry and songs. Robert Bateman

" RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD "

Robert Bateman

290 s/n Original Lithograph
7" x 4"
$275

Weightless as a sunbeam and glowing like an ember, the rufous hummingbird darts into view, disappearing as soon as you blink. Especially drawn to red flowers like a tiny bull charging a matador's cape, he rushes from one bloom to another. Robert Bateman
