the swan is basically a white bird and almost too pretty, I
decided to paint it back lit, making it primarily a sooty, dark
color The wing feathers lifted in courtship display are translucent
and glow like a stained glass window." Robert Bateman |

"As
a young naturalist growing up, one of my favorite books was
the large, Birds of America, edited by Pearson and John
Burrows, and published in 1917 and 1936. In this volume, Burrows
sums up my feelings about the bald eagle: “He draws great lines
across the sky; he sees the forests like a carpet beneath him,
he sees the hills and valleys as folds and wrinkles in a many
colored tapestry… dignity, elevation, repose are his. I would
have my thoughts take as wide a sweep. I would be as far removed
from the petty cares and turmoil of this noisy and blustering
world.” Robert Bateman |

"When
I saw this old horse collar hanging in an abandoned barn, it
conjured up all the richness of past eras. All of those little
straps and buckles would be common knowledge to the men and
boys who hitched up “Old Nellie” to whatever she had to pull.
They are meaningless to most of us today. The collar was probably
hung on the peg with a view to repairing it someday. That day
never came. The barn swallow, however, is still as active in
this new world as it was in the old, flitting by the collar
that his ancestor would have seen in use." Robert

"Throughout
my life, the few times that I have seen a barn owl it has had
an almost spiritual, unexpected quality. In
each case, I have been prowling quietly in or near old buildings.
Feeling a bit like an intruder, I have been startled
by the silent flapping of the barn owl’s wings." Robert

"A
traditional barn is like a piece of natural landscape. It was
built with materials found in nature in the vicinity. Weather
and organisms work on the wood and stone so that it evolves
and changes gradually with time. This particular barn was built
by my grandfather."

"This
scene is based on a memorable experience early one morning in
Africa. We visited a granite outcrop, which
was the home of a pair of black eagles.
As the sun warmed their perches on the higher rocks, upward
air currents were generated. Soon the eagles
took off, riding the thermals, and gave us a wonderful display
of flying skills as they hunted for prey." Robert Bateman |

"I
have been charged quite often by lone bull elephants who were
only bluffing. Although I never stood
my ground to test them, I felt that their efforts were halfhearted
bravado. Even as I departed, I have seen
them stop in a swirl of dust, tossing their heads and swinging
their trunks to put me in my place." - Robert Bateman |

"In
the early spring, you can look through the forest and see the
blossoms of the dogwood like glowing beacons or candles, particularly
when the sun shines through and they are backlit. This is the
primary effect I wanted to achieve in this painting. There is
a lightness, an airiness and a delicacy to everything—a kind of
gentleness. This is why I chose the bluebird for this painting
of early spring. It doesn’t sit there and sing away defiantly;
it has a little, low kind of purring chirp. It is one of the most
gentle of all birds." Robert Bateman |

"BRIGHT
DAY-ATLANTIC PUFFINS" |
|
|
"I
wanted to catch the feeling of a bright and breezy summer day.
The puffins make me think of old-time British sailors,
and the color of their bills reminds me of the nautical flags
and bunting decorating the sailing ships." Robert Bateman |
"BROWN
PELICAN AND PILINGS" |
|
|
"The
pelican painted here is alert but at ease with its bill resting
on its chest. The ropes and tackle on the
pilings echo the form of the pelican’s head and bill, while the
white textures repeat the pattern of its back plumage." Robert
Bateman |
"BULL
MOOSE" |

|
"The
first snows of winter find the bull moose in peak condition.
His antlers have been cleared of the ragged velvet leftover
from the summer growing, and his coat has reached its thick and
glossy prime. He is also in a fighting
mood and a dangerous animal even though the rutting season is
over." Robert Bateman |

"This
clump of grass caught my eye as I was visiting Ninstints, the
abandoned Haida village that I portrayed in Spirits
of the Forest. The frog is an important
part of the mythology of the Haida people, yet frogs are disappearing
all over the world, just as native cultures are disappearing.
Perhaps those very raindrops contain a trace of chemicals
from our modern technology, which is hurting the delicate web
of life on this planet."

"The
feeling I wanted to capture in this painting is one of wide,
open spaces of the big country where the pronghorns live.
They like to be able to see long distances to watch for
enemies. I tried for a transparent -

and space." Robert Bateman |

"The
broad-tailed hummingbird is strictly found in the areas of the

broad-tailed hummingbirds produce a loud, trilling noise in their
diving and looping display flights." Robert Bateman |

"The
beautiful Mount Kilimanjaro rises in the background of the setting
of Buffalo at Amboseli, but I was more interested in conveying
the detail and texture of this old buffalo’s own habitat - the
trees, stumps, grasses, dust, and mud that surround him in the
late-afternoon light. As often happens,
while I was painting I found a shape that interested me and that
became a theme in the picture - a sickle shape that appears in
the buffalo’s nostril and his horn. This
is echoed in the shadow on his rump, in the dry branches in the
foreground, and in the mud."
