180 s/n Canvas Edition 18" x 35" $599

"I saw this group of mute swans resting and preening beside the sea with dark water reflecting a dark sky and low, warm light gracing their shapes, like some off-stage lighting illuminating a "corps de ballet" getting ready for Swan Lake."- Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman

180 s/n Giclee Canvas  19" X 24"  $545
950 s/n Paper 15.5" x 19.5" $545

"Throughout my life, the few times that I have seen a barn owl it has had an almost spiritual, unexpected quality.  In each case, I have been prowling quietly in or near old buildings.  Feeling a bit like an intruder, I have been startled by the silent flapping of the barn owl’s wings." Robert Bateman

Robert bateman Barn Swallow and Horse Collar

"BARN SWALLOW & HORSE COLLAR"
Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
17" x 11.25"
$199

"When I saw this old horse collar hanging in an abandoned barn, it conjured up all the richness of past eras. All of those little straps and buckles would be common knowledge to the men and boys who hitched up “Old Nellie” to whatever she had to pull. They are meaningless to most of us today. The collar was probably hung on the peg with a view to repairing it someday. That day never came. The barn swallow, however, is still as active in this new world as it was in the old, flitting by the collar that his ancestor would have seen in use."  Robert Bateman

"For me, the main visual impact of this painting is the powerful, dark reflection shapes crossed by the strong vertical lines of the trees and their reflections.  The beaver is obviously slicing across this beauty on a busy errand known only to him." Robert Bateman

" BLACK EAGLE "
Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
20.75" x 13.5"
$225

"This scene is based on a memorable experience early one morning in Africa.  We visited a granite outcrop, which was the home of a pair of black eagles.  As the sun warmed their perches on the higher rocks, upward air currents were generated.  Soon the eagles took off, riding the thermals, and gave us a wonderful display of flying skills as they hunted for prey." Robert Bateman

"BLACKSMITH PLOVER"
Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper

"Driving through dry, big game country, watching for rhino, I saw instead this little plover huddled in the spindly shadows of a tiny tree. It was high noon and intensely hot. The network of cracks in the parched soil was interplaying with the latticework of shadows." Robert Bateman

"I have been charged quite often by lone bull elephants who were only bluffing.  Although I never stood my ground to test them, I felt that their efforts were halfhearted bravado.  Even as I departed, I have seen them stop in a swirl of dust, tossing their heads and swinging their trunks to put me in my place." - Robert Bateman

"Tradition can sometimes become lost amidst technology.  I admire tradition and traditional methods of creating things - whether it is a barn or a work of art.  I also take particular pleasure in traditional forms of art - like original prints - forms that require time and the skilled hands of a craftsman."  Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman

“For two years I taught high school geography in southeast Nigeria. It was a remarkable experience not only because of the high scholastic demands of the students and the rich and complex West African culture, but also because of the natural environment of the tropical rainforest. Since I was a boy I had been reading the entertaining animal collecting stories of Gerald Durrell. Perhaps my favourite was the Bafut Beagles, which took place in the Cameroons.

“We lived in the same habitat about a day's drive from Bafut.
As soon as I was established and had got my bearings of the local area, I sent word out to the nearby villages that I would pay money for small wildlife. Most of these went to the collection of the Carleton University Museum but some went to the Bronx Zoo Small Animal House. The most spectacular of these were the bush babies.

“There are a number of species of bush baby (6 genera, 16 species). Ours was the seldom seen Demidov's galago. If we humans are at the ‘top’ of the primate family tree then lemurs are at the evolutionary ‘bottom’. Demidov's galago is the smallest member of ‘our’ family. A full grown adult would nicely fill a teacup. We had five of them and although they lived in cages we would take them out one at a time to play around the room and around us. They would scamper over our heads and poke their fingers in our ears, which resulted in a sticky feeling. Afterwards I learned that, being nocturnal, they would find their way back to their nest in the forest canopy by urinating on their hands and feet on their way out, and that is why they were sticky. I have shown this one eyeing a large tropical beetle which it may or may not succeed in catching.” - Robert Bateman

"As a young naturalist growing up, one of my favorite books was the large, Birds of America, edited by Pearson and John Burrows, and published in 1917 and 1936.  In this volume, Burrows sums up my feelings about the bald eagle: “He draws great lines across the sky; he sees the forests like a carpet beneath him, he sees the hills and valleys as folds and wrinkles in a many colored tapestry… dignity, elevation, repose are his. I would have my thoughts take as wide a sweep. I would be as far removed from the petty cares and turmoil of this noisy and blustering world.”   Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
25.75" x 20"

"Sculptural forms in nature visually excite me. The trunk of this baobob tree reminds me of a great castle or a piece of mountainous landscape. The textures are varied and interesting and reflect the events that have taken place in the life of the tree."- Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Barn Swallows in August

" BARN SWALLOWS IN AUGUST "
Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
20" x 30.25"

"A traditional barn is like a piece of natural landscape. It was built with materials found in nature in the vicinity. Weather and organisms work on the wood and stone so that it evolves and changes gradually with time. This particular barn was built by my grandfather."
Robert Bateman

" BEACH GRASS & TREE FROG "
Robert Bateman

1250 s/n Paper and Lithograph
( 2 Piece Set )
$265

"This clump of grass caught my eye as I was visiting Ninstints, the abandoned Haida village that I portrayed in Spirits of the Forest.  The frog is an important part of the mythology of the Haida people, yet frogs are disappearing all over the world, just as native cultures are disappearing.  Perhaps those very raindrops contain a trace of chemicals from our modern technology, which is hurting the delicate web of life on this planet." Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Pronghorn

" BIG COUNTRY- PRONGHORN ANTELOPE
Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
13.5" x 25"
$255

"The feeling I wanted to capture in this painting is one of wide, open spaces of the big country where the pronghorns live.  They like to be able to see long distances to watch for enemies.  I tried for a transparent - almost opalescent - look to achieve this feeling of delicacy and space." Robert Bateman

" THE BIG PINES OF TEMAGAMI "
Robert Bateman

2500 s/n Paper

"Even though this is a small, Affordable Treasure, the scene depicted is one of wide open spaces and awesome grandeur.  Lose yourself in the flight of this eagle as he soars high above the pines." Robert Bateman

" BLACK-TAILED DEER IN THE OLYMPICS "
Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
20" x 29.75"
$245

"The black-tailed deer is a coastal race of the mule deer.  I have shown this mature buck in midsummer with his antlers in velvet. The setting is an alpine meadow in the Olympic Mountains. Summer is spectacular with cotton grass, Indian paintbrush and other flowers." Robert Bateman

Robert bateman Bluebird and Blossoms

" BLUEBIRD AND BLOSSOMS "
Robert Bateman

4500 s/n Paper
11.375" x 17"
$275

"In the early spring, you can look through the forest and see the blossoms of the dogwood like glowing beacons or candles, particularly when the sun shines through and they are backlit. This is the primary effect I wanted to achieve in this painting. There is a lightness, an airiness and a delicacy to everything—a kind of gentleness. This is why I chose the bluebird for this painting of early spring. It doesn’t sit there and sing away defiantly; it has a little, low kind of purring chirp. It is one of the most gentle of all birds."  Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
11.375" x 13.75"
$225

"The broad-tailed hummingbird is strictly found in the areas of the Rockies and the Great Basin.  It may be seen visiting the flowers in mountain meadows and usually nests in coniferous forests.  The wings of male broad-tailed hummingbirds produce a loud, trilling noise in their diving and looping display flights."  Robert Bateman

Robert bateman Buffalo At Amboseli

" BUFFALO AT AMBOSELI "
Robert Bateman

500 s/n Paper
20.25" x 31"
$395

"The beautiful Mount Kilimanjaro rises in the background of the setting of Buffalo at Amboseli, but I was more interested in conveying the detail and texture of this old buffalo’s own habitat - the trees, stumps, grasses, dust, and mud that surround him in the late-afternoon light.  As often happens, while I was painting I found a shape that interested me and that became a theme in the picture - a sickle shape that appears in the buffalo’s nostril and his horn.  This is echoed in the shadow on his rump, in the dry branches in the foreground, and in the mud." Robert Bateman

"The delicacy of this little killdeer contrasts with the heavy power of the railway ties and tracks, yet it fits perfectly into this man-made environment, as does the young dandelion."  Robert Bateman
