I came up with the concept some years ago but it took eight years and encouragement
from some of my art-collector friends to actually sit down and get to work on this
project. As work progressed I could mentally sense the wonderful aromas of this
damp, misty forest glade. In this scene the Elk demonstrates how it uses the
water to its advantage in order to keep the wolves at a safe distance. When
threatened, Elk, being very good runners and swimmers, will often lead their
pursuers to a nearby river or lake and escape by leaping in and swimming
to the other side. In this scene, it may well be that those two wolves have
friends nearby so we can only hope for a good outcome for our Elk, the main
subject of the painting. Judging from the scars on his body, this is not his first
brush with danger and I have a feeling that he knows how to handle
this delicate situation.
