Max Jacquiard - Great Northern at Marias Pass

Today's Burlington Northern Railway was formed by the 1970 merger
of four railways including the Northern Pacific and Great Northern. The GN
mainline, still very much in use, crosses the Rocky mountains via Marias pass
in northern Montana's Glacier National Park. In this scene, an eastbound
freight emerges from a snowshed approximately ten miles from the summit
of the grade at the continental divide. The locomotive is one of GN's largest; the
massive and powerful R-2s, built in the railway's own Hillyard shops at Spokane.

Max Jacquiard has a sizeable research library of printed materials, photos and
slides of steam trains and the places they would have operated. It is that attention
to precise and accurate details that can be seen in his paintings. The sensitivity
to his subject and quiet passion that is infused into each work seem to allow
Max Jaquiard to breath life into the canvases. The images he creates have
captured the imaginations of steam buffs across Canada and the United
States. His paintings grace the walls in homes across North America.
