Totems and Bear - Robert Bateman

Bateman paintings containing totem poles have sold very well in the past.
This Western Canadian scene captures the remnants of sacred monuments
that celebrate Indian culture. The black bear plays a key role in spiritual
practice as a symbol of freedom and strength.

“The village of Ninstints is the jewel of the Haida culture.
Although I am not a scholar I have taken a life long interest in tribal art.
At its best this art is comparable with any art in world history. It developed from its own deep cultural roots.
The isolation of earlier times permitted unique, creative development style. In my view the three strongest art forms
are those of the Sepic River in Papua, New Guinea, the Dogon in Mali and the Haida is Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlottes). If pressed I would put the Haida first. The deserted village of Ninstints is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.”
