Red Crossbills

This is a little study of red crossbills in a spruce tree. Although Crossbills
are members of the finch family, their bills have been adapted in a
peculiar way that resembles crossed fingers. Thjis adaptation allows their
} bills to hook seeds out of the cones of coniferous trees. As one would
expect, crossbills live throughout the boreal forest, from northern New
England and Newfoundland to British Columbia and Alaska. They often
move about in flocks. When I hear the chet-chet call of a flock of
crossbills, I am carried back to the many happy times I have spent
in the evergreen forests of the North. Robert Bateman
