" A PERFECT WORLD - AMUR LEOPARD " Michael Pape s/n Giclee Paper 8.375" x 12.75" $95 s/n Giclee Canvas 13" x 20" $295 The Amur Leopard, the most northerly of all leopard subspecies, this magnificent animal is among the most critically endangered mammals in the world. A recent population and distribution survey estimated that as few as 30 Amur Leopards survive in their natural habitat in the Russian far east, the Korean peninsula and the mountains of northeastern China, living exactly where the Siberian Tiger does. Illegal poaching to supply a ludicrous market for traditional Chinese medicines has been spurred by Russia's economic collapse, gross poverty, and lack of responsible law enforcement. These cats will go extinct without new awareness, law enforcement and changes to the problems of poaching and habitat loss. In my painting "A Perfect World - Amur Leopard", I tried to portray this cat as significant, beautiful and in need of respect. I painted this Amur Leopard in a pose that suggests indeed there is hope and that it is up to all of us to secure its future. . 5% of all sales go to The Amur Leopard Conservation Program. This painting has been reproduced in giclée form and printed at 1440 dots per inch directly onto archival acid-free, rich in texture, Somerset Velvet Watercolour Paper with pigmented inks. This Giclee on paper showed in excess of 100 years before any image deterioration could be perceived. The results speak for themselves. Only the highest quality stocks and inks have been used to create this print. Beautiful Dreamer won from over 900 entries as National Portfolio Winner. With about only 4,000 - 6,000 of these animals left in the wild they are an endangered species.Snow leopards use their long tails for balance and as blankets to cover sensitive body parts against the severe mountain chill. They are hunted and poached for their beautiful, warm fur and for their organs, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine. Without more education and stricter laws to protect them, these beautiful, magnificent cats only have a Ghost of a Chance to survive. Just like much of the world’s wildlife, this tiger is often misrepresented and misunderstood. The “Amur” tiger is often mistakenly called the “Siberian” tiger; however, it is not found in Siberia as the name would suggest. The “Siberian” name was thought to be a more exotic description, given to the species by Americans. The tiger’s proper name is “Amur,” indicating its native range in the Amur region of Russia. This piece is a tribute to both the natural beauty of the animal and its rich, distinctive heritage in the country.
