"This is my first published original stone lithograph.  I very much enjoyed drawing directly on the stone.  Its “tooth,” or texture, gives a solid, warm feeling, which brings to mind the ancient seas in which the rare Bavarian limestone was formed." Robert Bateman

"Canada geese, for me, are symbols of fidelity and territoriality.  I see them as forceful, direct birds.  In this painting I was thinking about the bond between the two and have shown the male on guard, watchful and alert, and the female on the nest. "  Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman cardinal And Sumac

" CARDINAL AND SUMAC "
Robert Bateman

2510 s/n Paper
13" x 19.5"
$175

"One of the ideas behind Cardinal and Sumac was inspired by a Smithsonian Museum display of an authentic East Indian village, complete with villagers going about their daily business.  I was strolling through when, all of a sudden, a villager wearing a flaming red turban walked past a rich, terra cotta-colored wall.  I was struck by the red-on-red vision - it just sizzled.  I knew then, I would someday paint a cardinal in sumac. Most North Americans have the opportunity to see cardinals in their own backyards.  The cardinal, however exotic in color, is one of our most familiar favorites.  I like the idea of the cardinal as a representative for Earth Day; it is appropriate that a backyard favorite represent our need to incorporate environmental action into our own backyards."  Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Cardinal And Wild Apples

" CARDINAL AND WILD APPLES "

Robert Bateman

12,183 s/n Paper
11.75" x 17.625"
$298

In a sense, this is a painting of wild apples which also happens to have a cardinal in it. I actually conceived the idea many years ago as one piece. In spite of, or perhaps because of, the cardinal's popularity, I have limited myself to doing very few cardinal paintings. I have done a winter cardinal, a spring cardinal and a female cardinal (after all, one-half of the cardinals in the world are female). I cannot decide whether this is a summer or an autumn cardinal. Perhaps I will consider it late summer since I already have an idea for a painting of an autumn cardinal.

I chose apples to divert your eye from the cardinal, which is a blatant bird to say the least. It is one of my favourite birds, but it is very obvious, so I wanted to give it some competition with a few spectacular and juicy apples.

These apples were growing on my favourite apple tree in Ontario. This is a unique tree producing fruit unlike any I have tasted -- sweet, aromatic, crisp, juicy and almost totally lacking in sourness . . . just to my taste.

All domestic apple trees come from grafting, not seeds. Every McIntosh apple comes from generations of twigs grafted from one tree on Mr. McIntosh's farm near Toronto. It was a genetic sport or freak which had great success. My tree is also a genetic freak, but it will remain forever wild with its unsprayed and blemished fruit. I am reminded of the lyrics of singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell's song, The Big Yellow Taxi. . . "give me spots on my apples but leave me the birds and the bees." Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Catching The Light Barn Owl

" CATCHING THE LIGHT-BARN OWL "
Robert Bateman

2000 s/n Paper
13.75" x 32.5"
$215

"The most intriguing artistic challenge in this painting was to capture the quality of the slash of light striking across the feathers of the owl, breaking up the obvious shape of the bird into a new and fleeting pattern." The barn owl has a wide distribution throughout the world's tropical and temperate areas. In recent decades, however, its numbers have been declining in many parts of its range. Various theories have attempted to account for this decline, including pesticides as well as the increase of automobiles, since barn owls often swoop low at night.

During the year our family spent in Germany, we lived in a typical, big old Bavarian farmhouse, one end of which was a huge barn. Ancient and rustic buildings strongly appeal to me, not only to my sense of nostalgia and imagination but also to my sense of visual aesthetics -- I simply like the look of them. Compared to the average suburban mall, a prefabricated structure that is designed to be impermeable, a barn has rich and organic surfaces which show the work of the hands of the men who built them so long ago. Barns show the patina of age; with physics, chemistry and biology all working together on their surfaces, they grow and develop in a living, organic manner even though they are just buildings.

Although I did not actually see an owl in our barn, I knew that they must have been there in the past, and I felt their presence on the dusty, cobweb-laden rafters. The most intriguing artistic challenge in this painting was to capture the quality of the slash of light striking across the feathers of the owl, breaking up the obvious shape of the bird into a new and fleeting pattern. I deliberately cast the owl's face in shadow -- almost "threw it away" -- a sacrifice to artistic intent which perhaps adds to the sense of elusive mystery of this vulnerable bird. Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Catching The Scent Wolf

" CATCHING THE SCENT " - WOLF

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper
9.5 " x 12"
$515

"Like man’s best friend, the wolf gets most of his information through his nose.  On a cold winter day, the air is carrying a constant flow of data.  Whether these molecular messages relate to a partner, a prey or an enemy, we do not know.  But the wolf knows." Robert Bateman

"Marshes and swamps are a wonderful place for life - not just human life - particularly if you are a naturalist.  Spring is my favorite time in these wetlands with the chorus of frogs, toads, dragonflies and other insects and especially breeding birds from ducks to rails, bitterns and songbirds."  Robert Bateman

"I enjoy painting man-made subjects from earlier eras because they have character and individuality.  It is evident that they have been worked on by the human hand and by the forces of nature.  This can no longer be said of our machine-made, packaged world, which is increasingly enveloping us." Robert Bateman

"Our human heritage is just as threatened as our natural heritage.  This is sad, because we are losing the reminders of our roots and a time when craftsmanship and care were more important than today.  Although I usually choose nature as the subjects of my paintings, I also want to record the remnants of our history." Robert Bateman

" CHARGING RHINO "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper

"The black rhinoceros is a prehistoric-looking beast.  In fact, although it is highly evolved, it does have a very ancient history.  He and his ancestors roamed the plains of this planet long before man appeared.  In the last ten years, poachers have caused the rhino population to decline by 90%. I have shown him here in his bold and rugged defiance."   Robert Bateman

Robert bateman Chaps Western Bluebird

" CHAPS - WESTERN BLUEBIRD "

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper

$199

"The wrangler guide rides into the clearing at the end of another day with a pack horse train. He removes his well worn chaps and other gear and hangs them on this moose antler. His cabin is in a remote valley, rarely visited. Perhaps this is why the Western bluebird feels comfortable enough to hide its nest somewhere within the vicinity."  Robert Bateman

"The cheetah is an animal of the wide-open plains.  That is where his prey, the antelope, lives, and that is where he can see vast distances.  Although he has no serious enemies, he likes to watch the herds for vulnerable animals and to generally keep in touch with his surroundings."  Robert Bateman

"In the big-game country of Africa I am always aware of the huge, overpowering, blue sky, especially at places like the Amboseli plain in southern Kenya, shown here in Cheetah Siesta.  I wanted to feel the presence of the sky in this picture, but I had to be persuaded by my wife, Birgit, that I could put the horizon as low as it is and still have room for the cheetah and the plain.  I also had to resist the temptation to let more tall grasses stretch across the horizon, or to introduce a cruising vulture in the distant sky.  By leaving it empty, the sky becomes as strong a force in the picture as the cheetah itself."  Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman

950 s/n Paper

$68

"The chimney swift uses its saliva as glue to stick twigs together while building his nest.  In ancient times, they built nests inside hollow trees, and today more commonly they use abandoned chimneys for that purpose.  Recently I discovered a chimney swift’s nest on the old wallpaper of an upper hall in an abandoned farmhouse.  In this case, the old house has provided shelter to a new family." There are many species of penguin in the Southern Hemisphere.  They all have special characteristics, but they have in common the tuxedo-like black on the back and white on the belly.  This painting is simply a portrait of one of these little fellows standing beside the typical lichen-encrusted rock of the Antarctic Peninsula." Robert Bateman

"I have long had a passionate appreciation for the artistic achievements of indigenous people, and none more so than the magnificent totem poles carved by the native inhabitants of the northwest Pacific coast. These exquisite abstract sculptures in wood represent for me the pinnacle of indigenous art.  They are as beautiful and powerful as anything created by Picasso or Matisse.  Unfortunately, the few old poles that remain in their natural settings are decaying and returning to the forest."  Robert Bateman

"I do not mean this to be a frightening picture.  The wolves, which normally avoid eye contact, are staring right at you.  Although they sense your presence, they can’t quite make you out.  They are alert and interested, but not about to attack.  They are equal to you, the viewer; they are on the same level.  The feeling of slight tension and respect between you and them is mutual.  You are in their domain.  Now that they know about you they will melt away into the gloom."  Robert Bateman

"The spotted owl is one of the rarest birds in North America. Since they require large acreage of old growth lowland forest, their existence is inevitably threatened by clear-cut lumbering activities.c  To me, the spotted owl represents almost a mystical spirit of the great western forest, as it was when white man first arrived.  It would be a pity if the last of the owls were to vanish in this generation." Robert bateman Coyote Head Study

" COYOTE HEAD STUDY "

Robert Bateman

2500 s/n Paper
7.125" x 10.75"
$68

"The much maligned coyote is the definitive survivor. Found in a variety of habitats, its diet consists of rabbits. rodents, carrion and occasionally, larger mammals, especially deer. Coyotes are one of the fastest terrestrial animals in North America, capable of reaching speeds of 38 miles per hour. The coyote will sometimes form a mutually beneficial partnership with a badger, in which the two will actually hunt together. The coyote uses its keen sense of smell to locate burrowing rodents so that the badger can dig them up with its powerful claws. Both then share the prize. It is no wonder that an animal so resourceful as the coyote not only has managed to survive, but that it has extended its territory. This is due in part to human intervention which included the clearing of forests and almost total elimination of the coyote’s competition, the wolf."  Robert Bateman

"The red crowned crane has a very special place in Japanese folklore as a symbol of long life and happiness. It has for thousands of years been portrayed in sculpture, crafts and especially painting. The charisma of the crane is not surprising in view of its size, elegant form and clear contrasting colors - white, black and red The other reason for its special place is that the cranes mate for life. The appearance of the crane and its pair bonding behavior combine to produce a visual spectacle almost unsurpassed in the natural world."  Robert Bateman

"The plains bison is not the only species that almost disappeared after Europeans arrived on the prairies.  Just as integral a member of the mixed grasslands ecosystem was the swift fox, a nocturnal hunter no bigger than a large house cat.  Despite its speed - it can run up to 37mph in short bursts - and the fact that its fur was not especially prized, by 1900 only a few isolated populations remained, and by the late 1930s the swift fox had completely disappeared from the Canadian prairies, the northern fringe of its reign.  In ensuing years the U.S. population has continued to decline, but the Canadian population has recently begun to make a comeback."
