Some birds associate in flocks on their wintering grounds. Others, of course, are solitary or travel
in pairs. Flocking is a protective device to help individuals survive a predator attack. This is
suitable for birds that feed on abundant and relatively uniform food supplies. Fields of
weeds
are a good example.
Snow buntings nest in the Arctic and spend the winter in the temperate zones. To them, a
snowy
farm field is a relatively warm and luxurious winter holiday resort. They are often
accompanied by other field finches and sometimes horned larks. I have shown one
lone
Lapland longspur, another Arctic nester.
"One of the most exciting winter sights for me is a flock of snow buntings. They seem to flash
and twinkle. At times, they are whiter than the snow as they wheel and dash, almost as one bird."
